You may notice some missing shows in the next few weeks (well, except for Security Now, Steve Gibson is an animal).

There will be no TWiT this week - I'm on the road, but we'll do two more this year on 12/17 and 12/24. Don't forget the ScottEVest coupon code - good through Christmas. 20% off when you use the coupon code LEO on the SeV site. And make sure to buy lots of Audible books. Have I mentioned that they make wonderful holiday gifts?

The other news-based shows, MacBreak Weekly and Windows Weekly - will slow down, too. We should have a new shows for both next week, but then it's two weeks off. Both shows will be back the week of January 6 and watch for special Macworld Expo coverage the week of January 14 on MacBreak Weekly.

We're taking this week off on The Daily Giz Wiz but we'll have all new shows through the rest of the holiday season.

There'll be a new net@nite this week, but then we're taking the rest of the year off. We'll return January 9.

I hope you'll use this time to catch up on old shows, spend time with family, and have a very happy holiday! We'll be back up and running full time the week of January 7.

Thanks as always for your support!

Thanks to the great Lori Lebeau-Walsh for those. My good friend Mikkel Aaland, author of O'Reilly's Lightroom Adventure is leading another photo expedition; this time it's to Tasmania with a bunch of the world's top photographers for the next edition of his book and he invited me to come. I couldn't resist even though I'm no photo pro. (They're billing me as a "special media guest.")

I do apologize for missing my friends on the mainland - the itinerary is limited to Tassie: a week in Hobart and a week in the wild. Our Qantas flight does stopover for seven hours in Sydney, so thanks to Aussie Mike, we'll do an impromptu meetup at the Starbucks at Terminal 3, Sydney Airport, 11a-1p on Tuesday. (It's a 12-hour flight and we cross the International Date Line so even though I'm leaving Sunday night I won't arrive in Sydney until Tuesday morning!) If there are any fans in Hobart who want to set up a meet up on Thursday or Friday let me know.

I'll be doing my radio show from Sea FM/Heart 107.3 Hobart Sunday and Monday morning 4-7a local time (Tasmania is UTC +11 but it'll be live in the States). The following week I won't have access to a studio so we'll air two shows I've recorded ahead of time with all new material. We should be able to put out the podcast versions of all four show shortly after they air, however.

Some of the TWiT shows will have to take a break until I come back. In particular, there won't be any new episodes of TWiT, net@night, and Windows Weekly from March 31 through April 15. We've pre-recorded episodes of Security Now and the Daily Giz Wiz - these shows won't skip a beat. Consider this a Spring Break - and a chance to catch up on podcasts you've missed. Everything will be back on schedule after I get back April 14.

I will be blogging and Twittering the whole time I'm Down Under, and I'm hoping to record audio and video, too, so keep an eye on Leoville if you want to follow my travels. See you in a couple of weeks!

The problem has always been that there's not much to see. I'm in Petaluma and the TWiTs are spread all over the world. We did a few live TWiTs on video but they were less than satisfactory. The audio was terrible, it was difficult to get everyone together, and it wasn't very compelling visually.

Fast forward to 2007. I started streaming video of my side of the radio show, and people seemed to like it. When the first floor of the TWiT Cottage became available in March I rented it and we've been equipping it as an Internet studio ever since. We had three Canon XL-2 cameras already from the previous attempt, I've added LED lights from Lite Panels and Newtek's Tricaster Studio for switching and voila, instant studio.

We're still getting up to speed technically (we're just using one camera until I get the Tricaster working) but you can watch now. I'll stream whatever's going on (usually podcast and radio show production with various intermezzos) from 11a-4p Pacific (2-7p Eastern, 6-11p UTC) every day but Monday and Friday. Eventually we'll do specials on Friday, too. The point of doing this live is to add interactivity and we'll be integrating Skype calls and chat questions as we get the technical kinks worked out. For the full chat interface visit the future home of TWiT Live (it's just a rough place holder for now - we're working on a more useful design) at twitlive.tv. Watch for updates on Twitter or join Stickam and you can get SMS text messages, email, or AIM announcements whenever I turn on the camera(s).

This is a work in progress - you're watching the tech rehearsals for something I hope will be fun and useful. Please let me know what you think! And a tip of the hat to Chris Pirillo and Tom Green, whose live streaming efforts inspired me to jump in, too!

The Website Is Down

On Friday evening we had a catastrophic failure of the web server that hosts TWiT Live, the TWiT Army Canteen, Leoville.com, and this site. The RAID 5 controller died, and when it did it marked all the disks unusable. Support personnel at Softlayer, our hosting company, weren't able to recover the disks, so they did the only thing they could do: replaced the controller and reinstalled the operating system. We're in the process of restoring all the sites.

TWiT.tv

Gordon Heydon, who maintains twit.tv for us has restored the site. He backed up the database last on September 6, so we'll have to recreate the subsequent entries by hand from feeds. That will take a day or so. No data has been lost. The podcasts and their RSS feeds are hosted elsewhere so they're not affected.

TWiT Live

We're back up and running thanks to Mape who rushed us a copy of his re-design. Thanks, Mape!

TWiT Forums

The database was backed up on September 4, but there's no backup of the software, so that's going to take some time. I'll reinstall as soon as I can.

TWiT Army

The database was backed up on September 4, but there's no backup of the software, so that's going to take some time. I'll reinstall as soon as I can.. I might wait until Evan ships Laconica 0.6 in the next few days.

Leoville.com

The posts and comments were fully backed up through Friday. I'm looking for a backup of the software and templates, and will restore these as soon as I find them.

I truly apologize for having inadequate backups of TWiT Army and the Forums. I've purchased additional on-site storage at Softlayer and we'll be doing automated daily backups from now on. Please forgive me for not taking better care of your posts.

Security Now 163 Error

Something went wrong when we posted Security Now 163 today - the show was cut in half. It's been an amazing year. When we began 2008 there were just two of us at TWiT LLC: Dane and me. Now, with the addition of Fr?d?rique, Colleen, and Tony, there are five, and we hope to add two more staff members in the next few months.

This year saw the creation of TWiT Live, our streaming video channel, and TWiT.am, our streaming audio. We added one show: Roz Rows, lost one, Jumping Monkeys, and created several live shows including TWiT Fit with Al Scardino, PC Perspective with Ryan Shrout, and Maxwell's House with Ray Maxwell.

In 2009 we hope to expand our offerings even more with new shows, an XMPP text stream to complement the audio and video streams, downloadable high-quality video versions of many shows, and more ways to participate in the community of TWiTs.

Our advertising agency, Podtrac, has done a tremendous job of finding us sponsors, and the support of companies like Audible, Citrix, Nerds On Site, Visa, Brain TonIQ, Scott E-Vest, and Drobo has helped us grow. We thank them, as always, for their support.

Thanks, too, to our TWiT hosts, from John C. Dvorak, Patrick Norton, Kevin Rose, Wil Harris, Tom Merritt, Veronia Belmont and the many other distinguished journalists who grace our TWiT panels, to MacBreak Weekly's Alex Lindsay, Andy Ihnatko, Merlin Mann, and Scott Bourne, to our individual hosts, Paul Thurrott, Steve Gibson, Amber MacArthur, Cammy Blackstone, Roz Savage, Dick DeBartolo, Randal Schwartz, Marc Pelletier, and Denise Howell. We are truly blessed with some of the most interesting minds covering technology.

I especially want to thank all the community volunteers who moderate the chat rooms and forums, contribute music and design support, maintain the servers, and bail me out of the many scrapes I manage to get into. The community that has risen around TWiT is its lifeblood. It's the reason we work so hard to create the programming, and I know it's the reason you continue to watch, listen, chat, and post. Thanks for playing with us. Together we're creating a new kind of media.

Many of you have also contributed financially to TWiT. These contributions have provided the capital we needed to build our live studio, expand our servers, pay the utilities, and all the other recurring costs of a growing operation. We truly couldn't do it without your support. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

I know the pundits are predicting tough times ahead, and that some members of our extended TWiT family will be faced with hardships. For that matter, I don't really know what 2009 will bring TWiT, but I have absolute faith in our community. The bonds we have forged together will help us all get through this next year as they have through the past three.

I wish you all a healthy, peaceful, and vital new year. I'm excited about the opportunities 2009 will bring. We'll be here for you, and I know you'll be here for us. Thank you for being a part of TWiT. We couldn't do it without you!

I'm always looking for ways to give the community more ways to participate. That's why we have two chat rooms and two forums and now, an official TWiT Wiki.

We'll be dumping every bit of information we can scrape up into the wiki, and I hope you'll help. The software is Mediawiki - the same software that Wikipedia runs on - so it should feel pretty familiar. You'll need to create an account with a verified email address before you can edit pages. That's to discourage spamming; I promise to keep the email private.

If you've got questions about TWiT visit the FAQ on the Wiki. If you want show notes, you'll find them there, too. Want John C. Dvorak's hat size? I'm sure someone will post it there sooner or later. The wiki is a community project. We'll post there but I hope you'll help, too.

On another note, our wonderful Drupal expert, Gordon Heydon, has updated twit.tv to Drupal 6. We've added a TWiT Picks page, so you can find stuff we mention on the shows, and there's a much improved search, powered by Google.

So click the two new links above: Wiki and Picks and let me know what you think!

http://graubuenden.articulate-online.com/7698140204
