It is bordered by Djibouti to the north-west, Kenya on its south-west, the Gulf of Aden with Yemen on its north, the Indian Ocean at its east and Ethiopia to the west. The Somali state currently exists solely in a de jure capacity; Somalia has no recognized central government authority nor any other feature associated with an established independent state. De facto authority resides in the hands of the governments for the unrecognized entities of Somaliland and Puntland and the United Nations-recognized, interim Transitional Federal Government (TFG), which until recently controlled only Baidoa. Violence has plagued Mogadishu, the capital, since warlords ousted former President Mohamed Siad Barre in 1991.

Fwicki - RSS Feed Management

Fwicki - RSS Feed Management

Thai boat hijacked by pirates off Somalia - KABC

MOGADISHU, Somalia -- Pirates hijacked a Thai fishing boat with 16 crew members Tuesday off the coast of Somalia, the same day a major Norwegian shipping group ordered its tankers to sail around Africa rather than use the Suez Canal because pirates ...

Somali Pirates Hijack Two More Ships

Separate bands of pirates hijacked two ships and captured their crews, while yet another opened fire on an Indian navy ship before being driven off - clear signs that the brigands roaming the Gulf of Aden are ...

Indian navy sinks suspected pirate 'mother ship'

In this Nov. 11, 2008 file photo made available by Indian Navy, Indian warship INS Tabar, right, escorts the MV Jag Arnav ship to safety after rescuing it from a hijack attempt by Somali pirates.

India: Pirate 'mother ship' left in flames

India is reporting that one of its vessels has taken down a chief pirate ship off the coast of Africa.

Somali: Locals send supplies to hijacked tanker

A local elder says Somali businessmen are sending food, cigarettes and drinks to a hijacked Saudi supertanker anchored off the coast of Somalia.

Asia held hostage on the high seas

Asia held hostage on the high seas By Keith Wallis HONG KONG - As maritime piracy in the Gulf of Aden and east coast of Africa threatens to spiral out of control, Asia's shipowners and political establishment ...

South Korea aims broadside at pirates

South Korea aims broadside at pirates By Donald Kirk SEOUL - It was one thing for 4,000 South Korean soldiers to have to go to northern Iraq to join a war that seemed remote from the country's immediate ...

RSS Advertising

<table width="100%" border="0" cellspacing="4" cellpadding="0">
