Hosts: Paul Thurrott and Leo Laporte

Windows 7 build 7068, Server 2008 Foundation, Encarta dead, Conficker dud, DOSBox, and more.

Windows 7 build 7068 has leaked

Windows 7 Build 7068 Screens Windows 7 Home Basic

Windows 7 Build 7068 Screens Windows 7 Home Premium

Windows 7 Build 7068 Screens Windows 7 Starter

No major changes this time around, but someone has hacked the installer so that you can install all of the retail product versions individually: Starter, Home Basic, Home Premium, Professional, and Ultimate

I've made up detailed tables comparing which features are available in each product edition

Some interesting Starter edition tidbits: The 3 app limit, weird limitations around the wallpaper, welcome screen

Related: AT&Ts subsidized netbooks starting at $49

Related: Gizmodo story about Windows 7 not working with third-party codecs is BS

Related: TechEd 2009 launch for Windows 7 RC? Maybe, but Microsoft is recommending that the press does not attend (!)

Windows Server 2008 Foundation

This one is cool

Low-cost server aimed for low-end hardware and very small businesses

will cost $150, 200 .... only on new hardware, not retail

Single proc only, up to 15 users, no CALs, no Hyper-V or virtualization licensing

Clearly aimed at Linux

Ballmer: It's like a netbook version of Server

Microsoft kills Encarta: Yet another Wikipedia-related death

Conficker came and went on April 1: A complete non-event

Everything Must Go is on for April 4

But ... will be the first of a few of these events this month. First one will be the big ticket items

Do it again a week from Saturday ... see how it goes

Tip of the Week: Speed up IE 8! See Bigfoot while you're at it

With a nod towards April Fools: Ed Bott does it again ... not the good kind

But who knows, it may work if you upgraded on a messy system

Software Pick of the Week: DOSBox

x86 emulator with DOS, lets you run DOS games in Windows XP/Vista/7

Like Wolfenstein 3D, mentioned last week, also Duke Nukem, etc.

Audible picks of the week: The Tourist: A Novel, Unabridged, By Olen Steinhauer, Narrated by Tom Weiner.
Microsoft in court again, Genuine Advantage rebranding, Windows 7 upgrades, XP mode, and more.

Microsoft goes back to court again in June to defend bundling Internet Explorer with Windows.

Microsoft combines activation and Genuine Advantage into Genuine Windows umbrella brand.

There are things you can, and cannot do when upgrading to Windows 7.

Microsoft's next-gen search, Zune HD, Windows Touch, and more Windows 7 leaks.

Microsoft's next generation search engine has been announced, named Bing, and it will be available in public beta next week.

The Zune HD will have an OLED multi-touch screen, HD output, HD Radio receiver, Wi-Fi, and a web browser. Should be shipping in September.

Windows Touch brings will offer an intuitive interface for multi-touch systems in Windows 7.

Another Windows 7 build has leaked, this time it is Build 7137.

Software Picks of the Week: Installpad takes a list of your favorite programs and will download and install the ones you pick.

Software tip of the week: Since there is no integration of SkyDrive with Windows Explorer, take a look at Dropbox or Live Mesh for drag and drop file sync.

Both are intended to help you run programs not designed for Windows Vista and with varying degrees of success can be very helpful if you run into problems getting some of those older programs to work.

Windows 7 RTM/GA, Starter gets more apps, Bing goes live, E3 Zune and Xbox 360, Winfox, and more.

Windows 7 RTM and GA dates set

Will be completed (RTM) in second half of July

Will be made generally available (GA) on October 22, 2009

These dates apply to Windows Server 2008 R2 ("Windows 7 Server") as well

Related: New builds in past week, 7137 and 7201 - no changes at all

Related: Concept of Windows 7 as "the new NT"

Microsoft confirms that Windows 7 Starter will lose the 3-app limit

I first reported on this about two weeks ago

But Starter is still hobbled and should be avoided if possible

Here's what's really happening

Bing goes live

Can be added to browser search box; supports visual search in IE 8

E3 announcements: Zune and Xbox 360

No big deal really

Instant On 1080p HD video streaming to Xbox 360

Microsoft needs to get more Zune into the Xbox 360 as soon as possible

Some good games coming up

"Project Natal" is the vaporware announcement of 2009. This reminds me of the robot from the original NES. That is, it will not do what people think it will.

Tip of the Week: Create custom jump list items for Explorer locations

Create a shortcut on the desktop to the target folder

Rename the shortcut to the desired name (Getting rid of the "- Shortcut" text)

Pin that to the Explorer icon, so it gets added to the jump list

Delete the shortcut from the desktop - The item remains on the jump list even after the shortcut has been deleted.

Thanks to Mark Osborn for the tip.

Software Pick of the Week

Winfox Adds jump list, multi-tab preview support to Firefox in Windows 7.
Thanks to Robert Benson for the tip.

Specifically, the room for improvement in features like Windows Search and why you will almost never find all the features you would like. User Account Control and your ability to switch it off when you don't want it is also discussed.

Doing some simple things like logging on as local admin or finding where to uninstall software can be frustrating to require searching, but this is part of getting used to change. We also discuss something sure to make those working in a multi-lingual environment happy: you no longer need to maintain separate media, service packs and hotfixes!

Europe getting 7 without IE, Bing is taking off, Morro, Google goes after Exchange, and more.

Microsoft will sell Windows 7 "E" Editions in Europe without Internet Explorer

Bing is off to a fast start

"News" surfaces about Morro

WWDC: What's in it for a Windows user?

Google goes after Exchange, offers free Outlook migration tool

Tip of the Week:

Living la Vida 7 means living like you have Mac OS X - Sometimes "going all in" requires a bit of rethinking. In this case, pre-populating the Windows 7 taskbar with all the shortcuts you regularly use and forgoing the Start Menu almost entirely.

Software Picks of the Week

Game Booster will disable system processes and clean your ram at the touch of a button to optimize your gaming performance.

Thanks to Jason More for the tip.

Mozilla Firefox Add-on Collector allows you to pre-define all the Firefox add-ons you want and install them in a single click. Nice for reinstalls

Thanks to Jason More for the tip.

As Vista leaves the test labs and gets installed on ?real? systems, we?ll get to see just how well it holds up. In this PodCast I talk about a bad upgrade experience I had, how the populace may react to User Account Control, and the availability of OEM editions of Vista being made available.

Windows 7 retail pricing, RC downloads, MSE/Morro public beta, iPhone 3GS, the Web's future, and more.

Windows 7 retail pricing revealed

Basically the same as Windows Vista

Huge discounts if you preorder for a limited time

Free copy of Windows 7 for anyone buying Vista-based PC

Missing pieces: Windows Anytime Upgrade pricing, multi-PC licensing

More to come

Windows 7 RC downloads extended to August 15

Previous date was end of July

MSE/Morro public beta comes and goes

75,000 download limit hit within 24 hours

Unclear if there will be more public beta releases

iPhone 3GS off to a great start

Had time to play with a Palm Pre this week

It's too slow, the app situation is an embarrassment

Microsoft can't move quickly enough with Windows Mobile; could be too late already

The future of the web

HTML 5 vs. Adobe Flash vs. Silverlight

Microsoft should be releasing IE updates every year

Where's HTML 5 support in IE?

It's time for more transparency

Otherwise, just give up and adopt WebKit or Gecko

Tip of the Week: Drag and drop to Explorer address bar in Windows 7 - Having trouble finding the tiny gap between icons and the underlying window? Windows 7 makes it easier.

Grab classic games for cheap at [http://www.gog.com GOG.com (Good Old Games)] - Like Steam, but for last decade's best games

Ex: Duke Nukem 3D ($6), Fallout ($6), Unreal Tournament GOTY ($10)

No DRM, redownload purchased titles whenever you want

Excellent compatibility across XP, Vista (including x64)

After-purchase goodies, like wallpapers, PDF documentation, videos, more

Software pick of the week: Paul Allen is back, sort of
