Trisdee gave an unusual encore performance after his H?ndel/Haydn harpsichord/piano recital...--------------------DISCLAIMER: It is widely accepted amongst traditional Thai musicians that the Thai oboe is one of the most difficult traditional instruments to play. Without extraordinary co?rdination between the fingers, the tongue, and the air, the instrument tends to go completely out of tune and produce really obnoxious sounds...Pressure from the tongue is applied against the reed to get higher notes (from C an octave above middle-C, upwards). Circular-breathing is also an essential part of its playing technique.The use of overtones and harmonics is ubiquitous. For instance, with all the holes open, one can up to (at least) NINE notes, namely: the middle-C; the B (a seventh above), with its neighbouring notes (A, C, and D, all controlled by the tongue); as well as the top A, top B, top C... AND D! All this depending on the amount of air and [especially] tongue pressure applied. So as you can imagine, controlling this instrument pitch-wise is simply insane. (In this aspect, I believe it is quite similar to the French Horn where it?s the embouchure rather than tongue pressure.)You may also notice that huge vibrato is usually applied on the E, a third above middle C, as well as on the B a fifth above that (not present in this piece). This is one of its many quirks.It is also instructive to note that the instrument, as with all traditional Thai instruments, is in the THAI scale, where the octave is divided into 7 'almost' equal notes. Many have attempted to define the scale as being "7 exactly equal steps" but the fact remains that Thai music is largely contextual and a note can be slightly sharp or flat depending on the context. (This performance, as well as the nature of the piece, should not be taken as a presentable example, however...)This attempt to perform the instrument in public was made 3 months after Trisdee's first lesson, and it is apparent that his control of the instrument still needed a lot of work...Despite the comedic nature of this performance, there was no intention whatsoever to be disrespectful in any way towards traditional Thai music or the instrument.-----------------(We did I have to refer to myself in third person!?)
