Blues History - How The Role Of The Guitar Evolved In Blues - Part 3...
Fri, 06 Apr 2007 07:12:30 GMT
|
|
History Of The Slide Guitar - There are many theories as to the origin of the
slide guitar. W.C. Handy famously recalled hearing an unknown musician using a knife on
the strings of his guitar. But this unknown bluesman had scarcely invented the style.
For centuries musicians around the world have created sounds by dragging objects across
stringed instruments. One example is the West African musical bow. This is a one-stringed
instrument attached to a gourd resonator, and held against the body, while the player
plucks the string and uses a bone or metal to vary the pitch.

Blues History - How The Role Of The Guitar Evolved In Blues - Part 2...
Thu, 05 Apr 2007 06:00:21 GMT
|
|
B.B. King is almost certainly the single most important electric blues guitarist
of the last half century. His style, full of vibrato and melodic invention, has been so
influential that it is hard to conceive of a contemporary blues guitar solo that doesn't
feature at least a couple of recognizable King-derived phrases. If B.B. King represented
an increasing sophistication in blues playing, his contemporary John Lee Hooker kept
alive its anarchic primitive roots. Hooker's signature tracks, like 'Boogie Chillen',
are one-chord boogies in which the guitar is turned all the way up and used to project
rhythm and menace.

Blues History - How The Role Of The Guitar Evolved In Blues - Part 1...
Wed, 04 Apr 2007 06:11:31 GMT
|
|
Today, when we think of the blues we immediately think of the guitar. It was not
always so, however. Back in the 1920's, when the first records with the word 'blues' in the
title were being made, more often than not they'd be piano-led recordings, close in style
to the jazz and gospel recordings of the same period. if you listen, for instance, to the
recordings of the enduring icon of 1920's blues, Bessie Smith, you'll be searching in vain
for a guitar part; instead you'll hear sophisticated piano and brass arrangements, played
by the likes of Fletcher Henderson and Coleman Hawkins, or even Benny Goodman.

This list of music terms and definitions will conclude our list of terms
and definitions for the week. We will periodically post music terms and definitions in
the Riff TV blog. There will be times when we post the terms in groups of two. It is a
good musical practice and discipline to develop the habit of studying theory terms that
