Riff TV Fwicki - Favorite Artist Profile
Eric Clapton is the original guitar hero. He was born in Surrey, southern England in 1945. Eric started playing the blues while at art school in the early 1960's. Soon afterwards he joined the Yardbirds, then left (to be replaced by Jeff Beck) when he decided they were becoming too commercial.
His brief stay with John Mayall's Bluesbreakers was pivotal. In this band he was allowed to give his blues playing free rein. Eric's guitar hero period peaked with his next band, Cream, a hard-rock trio in which he could solo for as long as he liked. After the band split up he made one classic album with Derek And The Dominoes, featuring his masterpiece Layla.
For several years, Eric battled heroin addiction. Once recovered, his comeback record, 461 Ocean Boulevard, saw him playing acoustic guitar and dobro much of the time. Through the 1970's and 1980's his work headed into commercial pop-rock, before returning to his roots in the 1990's with a series of traditional blues albums.
The music of Eric Clapton is more than important to anyone who considers major influences on the development of modern rock music. Eric's music is just as popular as it has always been, if not more-so.

Eric Clapton - Layla
J.J. Cale & Eric Clapton - After Midnight
Eric Clapton has had two major loves when it comes to electric guitars. Through his early years (until the break-up of Cream) he preferred the Gibson Les Paul. After Cream and following the influence of Jimi Hendrix, he made the switch to the Fender Stratocaster. The most famous Stratocaster in the Eric Clapton collection was his famous black model which he fondly named "Blackie". Eric auctioned "Blackie" to benefit his "Crossroads" charity. The famous Fender Strat fetched $450,000 making it one of rock music's most expensive memorabilia guitars ever sold.
Blackie was put together by Clapton from three different Stratocasters. These came from a lot of six he bought in at the Sho-Bud music store in Nashville, Tennessee in 1970. Three of the six he gave away as presents to George Harrison, Steve Winwood and Pete Townshend. From the remaining three, he took the best parts and assembled Blackie. He played the guitar on stage and in the studio until 1987 when it was finally retired.
Eager not to lose the sound of such a well-loved instrument, Clapton worked with Fender to produce The Eric Clapton Signature Stratocaster, a guitar designed to recreate Blackie, but with modern electronics. With Eric's guidance, particular enhancements were made to the compression sound. A dedicated tone button allows the compression to fatten the sound considerably. At first the guitar was only available commercially in Ferrari Red, 7-Up Green and Charcoal Grey, but by 1991 Clapton relented and allowed the guitar to be commercially produced in black.

Jethro Tull Live at Montreux 2003 Blu-ray Review
Mon, 06 Oct 2008 03:12:18 GMT
Jethro Tull is a rather experimental group, one whose songs can best be described as "irreverent yet tasteful," or maybe even "rock flute." Yes, rock flute.

Did you know that Eric Clapton is an exact anagram of Narcoleptic? Appropriate, I think, with reference to some of his fairly dull recent output, but not really much to do with sport, as I am sure I shall be told in no uncertain terms on the Guardian ...
