Mon, 29 Dec 2008 22:25:03 GMT
It?s that time: predictions for the year ahead and a look back at how we did in the year past. Several of last year?s predictions proved highly accurate, as many of the topics we devote attention to ? social networking, startups, and increasingly mobile apps ? evolved according to plan. Looking ahead, we think next year is going to be defined largely by how companies and the entrepreneurs ...

Loopt Snags AT&T, Now Available On Every U.S. Carrier
Tue, 23 Dec 2008 16:49:53 GMT
Mobile social network Loopt goes live on three AT&T phones today, which was the last major carrier holdout. Loopt is now available in the U.S. on Sprint, Verizon, Metro PCS, T-Mobile and Boost. The service is free for a year and then a $4/month fee kicks in. You can get Loopt for free on the iPhone (and there is a TechCrunch version), the Blackberry and Android as well. We?re big believers that mobile is the future of social networking. Loopt and a handful of other brave startups are pushing the envelope on mobile social networks while the big guys, Facebook and MySpace, sit on the sidelines.
A year in mobile: social networks - The key application?
Tue, 23 Dec 2008 16:49:53 GMT
Has the mobile industry stumbled on the killer app that it had just agreed to agree doesn't exist? Certainly, from Shozu to Ovi, it was the hot topic of 2008 Right back in February, when Yahoo! announced the second of its One range of mobile services - this time a presence enabled messaging service that put your SMS, email, IM and social network conversations all in one place, categorized by user, not by "Service" - things seemed to be pointing to social networking as a key driver for the year.

What is the future of mobile social networking?
Sun, 04 Jan 2009 05:59:45 GMT
As last week was a lot about social networking and mobile social networking in the media - today we ask our Opinion Leaders about what they think the future of mobile social networking is. There were already many interesting responses. See this link for more of them. I?d say - Accessing social networks with a mobile will be bigger than via PC within two years - Overall, they?ll become less important as a percentage of mobile web traffic, as other types of mobile website get discovered and used - Look out for a huge growth and therefore influence from emerging markets. Already Indonesia, South Africa and The Philippines are huge markets - Advertising will emerge as the primary (but not the only) revenue driver.

The 4G user experience ?
Sun, 04 Jan 2009 05:59:45 GMT
Back in 2007, I conducted research on trends involving emerging technologies and next generation networks as part of my job at Alcatel-Lucent?s wireless team. That summer, I joined a cross-functional team to develop a vision portraying how mobile broadband and, most specifically, the rollout of 4G wireless networks will help improve productivity, booster education and enable new ways to communicate, socialize, collaborate and enjoy life. The following 8 minute video shows one of the outcomes of that research. We focused on understanding the needs and expectations of two fictional personas: Zoe, a millennial living in the year 2010, and Ethan, a middle age professional in 2015. The goal was to project today?s emerging trends into a no so distant future in which they become commonplace and mainstream experiences. Getting to work on this stuff with the best in the industry was a very rewarding experience. Video thumbnail. As usual I will welcome your comments and emails.
