Description: In computer hardware, Serial ATA (SATA) is a computer bus technology primarily designed for transfer of data to and from hard disks and optical drives. It was designed as a successor to the legacy Advanced Technology Attachment standard (ATA), and is expected to eventually replace the older technology (retroactively renamed Parallel ATA or PATA). Serial ATA adapters and devices communicate over a high-speed serial link. At the physical layer of the Serial ATA architecture, the data-connection is formed by two pairs of (unidirectional) signal wires. Over these wires, SATA uses Low Voltage Differential Signaling (LVDS), enabling much higher (per-wire) signaling rates (1.5 Gbit/s and up) than traditional parallel ATA. Byte data is encoded and transmitted using 8B/10B encoding, which is also used in Ethernet, Fibre Channel, PCI Express, etc.

It seems that single core processors are rapidly becoming things of the past. They might be virtually extinct a couple of years from now, all thanks to the proliferation of dual core processors and more recently, quad core processors that are taking over the market by storm.
