In Memory Of Gashouse Dave....

"Hey Homes....listen to this!", were the words I had heard so many times on the phone, often very late at night. But no matter the time, I always took the call because the man behind those words made me smile way too many times.

The first time I met "Gashouse" Dave Shorey was when he came to our home in Van Nuys to turn off the gas. The grizzled persona of David Randall Shorey not only kept the gas on but also revealed a true bluesman possessed of a unique talent. The details of that first meeting are in the show today.

I would like to thank my friend, Tom Sullivan, a very accomplished musician himself and a long term friend of Dave for joining me on this show and sharing some of his fond memories of the Gasman.

I would also like to thank Norm Sancho and Billy DaMota for arranging a great send-off for Gashouse Dave last week.

We are now preparing Dave's "Guitar King - Live In Hollywood" for release. Playing with Dave on that recording are Norm Sancho (bass) and Eddie Avilla (drums). The recording was made at Grandmaster Studios with Jimmi Mayweather at the engineering helm. The recording date was 7/13/96 and we are just sorry that Dave won't be around to enjoy its forthcoming release.

Gashouse Dave will long be fondly remembered throughout Southern California by the many lives he touched....on and off the stage.

In the 50s and 60s, there was a thriving music business on both coasts. Major and independent record labels were constantly searching for new artists and new songwriters. It was during this, the most exciting time for the music industry that Bobby Hart came to Hollywood with dreams of being in the music business.

His dreams, timing and his remarkable talent led to his being nominated for a Grammy, a Golden Globe and an Academy Award. Along with his writing partner, Tommy Boyce, the duo produced over 100 million units sold around the world. The two writers vast list of hits includes songs for The Monkees, Little Anthony, Jay and The Americans, Freddie Cannon, Dean Martin and Paul Revere and The Raiders. They also wrote the "Days Of Our Lives" theme which has been running daily for over forty years.

Recently, I had the golden opportunity to browse a catalog from Ace Records in England. I was amazed at the thousands of titles available in that beautifully prepared catalog. I was whisked through time as though I were in a time machine.

I marked down the CDs I would have liked never thinking that I would receive them all. To my surprise, they sent everything I had checked off. It was like having all my birthday wishes come true.

The show today is a thanks to Ace for their generosity and to Mr. Alec Palao for setting the process in motion.

May I suggest you crank up your computer and travel to Ace Records and request a catalog for your own "time travel" experience. I'm in heaven.

A Tribute To The Gasman!
Sun, 17 May 2009 02:05:33 GMT     Digg! Bookmark This Page

I met David Shorey in 1992. I was Mr. Mom at the time while my wife was in chiropractic school. I'll admit things were tough. The royalty checks had turned into dribbles and we were struggling to make ends meet.

One day, I see a man at our gate in front so I go out to see what he wants. He said he was from the Gas Company and had come to turn off our gas. I guess we hadn't paid the bill. While we were talking, he noticed one of my gold records through the window. That changed the course of the conversation to music. The gas man told me that when he wasn't turning off peoples' gas, he was a guitar player who loved the blues.

He went inside the house with me so that I could show him some guitars. Hours later the gas was still on and I had a new friend.

Throughout the years Dave and I became closer and I went on to play several gigs with him in the south land. He was a great player and could emulate nearly any Bluesman he had heard.

I remember one afternoon in rush hour traffic, we were driving together down the 405 South heading to a gig. When we were passing Hillside Memorial Park, Dave slowed down to a crawl. I looked over at him to see what he was doing and he had his head down and was murmuring something softly to himself. By now the traffic is honking their horns and screaming epithets out their windows at this car creeping along. After a few minutes, Dave became normal again and said, "I always say "Hi." to Bloomfield when I drive by." It was then I learned he had played with Mike Bloomfield (Bass) for some time.

David Shorey had a heart as large as a Cadillac and it's hard to believe we won't have those all night conversations about his writing, his music and his life in general.

Recently we hadn't been in touch that much. I talked to him about six months ago and he never mentioned a word about his illness. That was Dave all over. He would talk all night about trivial things but when it came down to something important like his health, he never said a mumblin' word.

We are preparing a special show to pay tribute to the man who let my gas stay on so I could feed my kids. A true human being and a good man. Gashouse Dave Shorey. Rest In Peace my Brother.

Memphis Musician Jim Dickinson Dies At 67!

By Bob Mehr (Contact), Memphis Commercial Appeal

The North Mississippi Allstars have lost their father, Bob Dylan has lost a ?brother,? rock and roll has lost one of its great cult heroes and Memphis has lost a musical icon with the death of Jim Dickinson.

The 67-year-old Dickinson passed away early Saturday morning in his sleep. The Memphis native and longtime Mississippi resident had been in failing health for the past few months and was recuperating from heart surgery at Methodist Extended Care Hospital.

_________________________________________________________________

?He went peacefully,? said his wife, Mary Lindsay Dickinson, adding that her husband remained in good spirits until the end. ?He had a great life. He loved his family and music. And he loved Memphis music, specifically.?

During the course of his colorful half-century career, Dickinson built a worldwide reputation as a session player for the likes of Dylan and The Rolling Stones, a producer for influential groups including Big Star and The Replacements, a sometime solo artist and the patriarch of a small musical dynasty through his sons, Cody and Luther Dickinson of the North Mississippi Allstars.

Just last weekend, a tribute concert headlined by singer-songwriter John Hiatt and featuring a host of Memphis musicians was held at The Peabody Skyway to help defray Dickinson?s medical costs.

Dickinson?s earthy musical approach resonated with his peers: Bob Dylan, who was a longtime friend and collaborator, acknowledged him as a ?brother? while accepting a Grammy award for 1997?s Time Out of Mind; The Rolling Stones, ever wary of outsiders, brought Dickinson in to add his soulful piano touch to their classic Sticky Fingers ballad ?Wild Horses.?

As a producer, Dickinson was a studio alchemist in the tradition of such great Memphians as Sam Phillips and Chips Moman, for whom he worked. Dickinson was willing take on any role, acting as a protector, parent or prankster for his artists ? thus helping him forge creatively rewarding relationships with difficult talents including Alex Chilton, Paul Westerberg and Ry Cooder.

Dickinson?s reach and impact on Memphis music over the last four decades is significant; perhaps more than anyone, he was uniquely connected to the city?s historic past and its present.

In addition to being one of the key forces behind the rise of Memphis? Ardent Studios, Dickinson?s deconstructionist roots-rock band Mud Boy & the Neutrons proved a seminal influence on several generations of local acts.

Dickinson remained busy during his final years, continuing to produce local artists, including the breakthrough CD for Memphis roots chanteuse Amy LaVere, as well as several projects for his sons. He?d also been writing and performing with a crew of musicians half his age in the garage bands Snake Eyes and Trashed Romeos in recent months.

Born in Little Rock on Nov. 15, 1941, and briefly raised in Chicago before settling in Memphis, the young James Luther Dickinson came up in a musical hothouse, influenced by his piano-teacher mother and mesmerized by the sounds permeating from the radio.

?There was something about the voice coming out of the box that got me. That?s where it all started,? Dickinson recalled in his final interview, given to The Commercial Appeal in May.

As a student at White Station High School, Dickinson formed his first band, The Regents; he later had the distinction of singing on The Jesters? 1966 garage-rock nugget ?Cadillac Man,? the last great release on Sun Records.

After a stint in college in Texas, Dickinson returned to the Bluff City, where he began a career as a session player, eventually forming The Dixie Flyers, a group that became house band for Atlantic Records, and backing artists such as soul queen Aretha Franklin and R&B belter Little Richard.

In 1972, Dickinson released his first solo record, the cult classic Dixie Fried. The LP would prove the apotheosis of a kaleidoscopic musical vision he dubbed ?world boogie.?

Significantly, starting in the mid-?70s, Dickinson made an almost seamless transition from working with mainstream major label acts to punk and indie artists. Beginning with his work on the seminal Big Star album Third/Sister Lovers, Dickinson?s ?anything goes? aesthetic made him a favorite choice to produce numerous alternative acts in the ?80s and ?90s.

A Sample Of The Best Music You Never Heard!

BluePower has been playing the Blues for fifteen years now and to be honest, we're just not finding the caliber material we would like to play in order to remain consistently strong. Sure....we could keep playing the old artists, the great artists who created the Blues in the first place (and we will from time to time) but there are now dozens of sites playing the Blues. When we started on the air in 1995 we were among three web sites with the intention of keeping the Blues alive.

Recently, a friend mentioned that I had produced and engineered many great artists during my time that never saw the light of day. He said that perhaps BluePower should look to doing something new with something old. After all....if you've never heard something, then it's new to you correct?

The Best Music You Never Heard.

Please let us know if there is anything in particular that strikes your fancy and we'll make sure to place more of that material into our upcoming shows.

Here's the music:

1)...."The Passionate Side"....Basha....unreleased....publisher unknown
2)...."Shut Up!"....The Hornets....unreleased....Hollywood Allstar Music

3)...."Full Moon"....The Infallibles....unreleased....publisher unknown

4)...."Walk Around"....Cliffdweller....unreleased....Hollywood Allstar Music
5)...."Spanish Eyes"....Real George....unreleased....Hollywood Allstar Music

Hi John,
Hard to believe that two years have passed since we met in Hollywood for our young artist showcase. Fredrik Strand Halland is trying to make some in-roads in the United States. He attended SXSW in Austin, Texas and continues to make progress with singing in English. It is hard to watch great talent struggle while some with little talent get packaged and find success. Grant Austin Taylor finally got his Gibson endorsement and is leading a younger band called Holly Road while still performing with adults as the Grant Austin Taylor Band. A few other young ones to watch are Tyler Dow Bryant not a kid but not yet 21) and Levi Platero.
Rather than curse the darkness that is the music industry these days, I am lighting a candle. I was fortunate to meet an amazing young man who had his own internet radio show that featured young artists from all over the world. Brent Albert led a tragic life but he was relentlessly positive in his attitude and always encouraged others that came across his path. Brent's lost his twin brother to leukemia and lived with his dad apart from his drug addicted mom. Music was his refuge and inspiration. In April of 2008 he went to a doctor for the chronic headaches he was having and after some tests, was diagnosed with a PNET brain tumor. Rather than retreat into his own world, Brent saw teens and kids in the pediatric oncology department at Hershey Medical Center who were scared, isolated and in constant pain. He knew that music could help them as it had helped him throughout his life. Brent would call me, often late at night when he couldn't sleep and we would talk about how to bring music into the lives of these kids. We read up on music therapy and discovered that this was an area of concentration at some of the better music schools like Berklee College of Music. It is so much more than just having musicians come in and play for patients. Our next task was to find an existing nonprofit that would "sponsor" our idea of bringing music therapy and a library of music to hospitals and infusion centers everywhere. We found Rock Against Cancer (www.rockagainstcancer.org) and I wrote a proposal. Lisa White and her Board welcomed us and Brent was overjoyed. I remember sending Brent 10 iPod nanos packaged in Apple Computer bags with stuffed animals. Brent was so excited in handing them out at his hospital with his dad. He let us know that he wasn't going to see this project all the way through and it was harder for us to accept this than it was for him. He had a strong spiritual (not religious) connection through his partial native heritage. In January he seemed to be rallying from an emergency surgery so I went to NAMM as he demanded I do. On my way home to the Bay Area, around 8 p.m. after a magnificent sunset just two hours earlier, I felt a warm and peaceful feeling come over me. About two hours later I arrived home and checked my computer. There was an email from Brent's younger brother Shane telling me that Brent had passed away around 11 pm eastern time, just an hour before his 16th birthday on January 19th.
So now Heart of Gold Entertainment is focused on making the Soulshine Project (named after the song written by Warren Haynes and performed by the Allman Brothers Band and Gov't Mule) a fitting legacy for Brent and a new resource for young people in treatment for cancer and other life altering conditions. We began our fund raising in May with the first of many small benefits hosted by young artists. We are documenting their efforts and will approach larger donors soon. We are in a position where all funds raised by the young artists will be double matched. We are pushing to raise $12,500 by year end. This will be matched by a wealthy private donor and then this total will be matched by Hot Topic. If all goes according to plan, we will have $50,000 which is what we need to start a comprehensive music therapy program at Hershey Medical Center (Penn. State University) where Brent was treated. If you have any suggestions or can give Soulshine Project a mention, let me know. We also have a compilation CD in the works that has a strong line up of donated tracks from young artists worldwide.
Warmly,
Bill Boyrer

Hats Off To America's Firefighters!

I have had an up-close and personal meeting with fire. Our house burned down when I was thirteen. I never forgot those brave Firefighters (volunteers I might add) who came just a bit too late to save our little house. Without them, the loss would have been total.

Here in California, we all know the true worth of the Firefighter. We have watched year after year as our forests and hills rage with fire only to be beaten back by these courageous men and women who take their motto seriously and lay their lives on the line day after day.

Even now, the largest wildfire in California's history is burning acres by the handful and is requiring nearly 5 thousand men and women to bring it under control. The Firefighters lost two good men during the fight when overwhelmed by smoke, their truck slid off a narrow dirt road and rolled down a steep, thickly forested hill which was covered in flame.

The victims were fire Capt. Tedmund Hall, 47, of San Bernardino County, and firefighter Specialist Arnaldo "Arnie" Quinones, 35, of Palmdale. Hall was a 26-year veteran, and Quinones had been a county firefighter for eight years. I wish to personally apologize for mis-pronouncing Specialist Arnaldo "Arnie" Quinones name during the program. I should have double checked the spelling.

Not only are Firefighters there when fires break out but they are also a second line of defense for America at home. This is something I did not know. I'm hoping to learn more about the Firefighter's role in national defense.

As for myself....I wish to thank all the fire crews battling to save lives and property as I write. I have relatives whom are Firefighters and have heard the harrowing tales told of unsung heros and friends who are no longer with us.

Thank you Brothers and Sisters of the American firefighting brigades.

Occasionally I run behind with new shows and for that, I apologize. However; there are always a plethera of shows looming in BluePower's background which I can substitute while I work on something new.

This week, I am posting the BB King show I did several years ago. The reason being that it is a good show and quite informative. It speaks of BB's influences, which are significant for young guitarists. They were for me.

Part One deals with the set up at the Mirage Hotel in Las Vegas where Mr. King was to perform. You get a definite idea as to what instruments BB uses in his ensemble; the set up etc. Good stuff to know.

Then John interviews BB King....truly, one of the nicest men on the planet.

Part Two deals with BB's musical influences as a young musician growing up. His influences may astonish you.

Many thanks to my dear friend, Jim Cantale of ESI Event Services for his efforts on BluePower's behalf.

I do hope you enjoy BB King Parts One and Two.

Thank You,

Just Imagine....The Life Of John Lennon In Story And Song!
Tue, 20 Oct 2009 01:21:06 GMT     Digg! Bookmark This Page

Just Imagine....Seeing John Lennon alive one more time.
Just Imagine....Hearing Lennon's music performed by John Lennon himself.
Just Imagine....Taking a trip through a time that was both wonderful and horrifying.
Just Imagine....Hearing the "behind the scenes" stories of John Lennon's songs told by Lennon himself.

These experiences were all beheld by a packed house this afternoon at the NoHo Arts Center Theater.

This writer was both touched and amazed by the beauty of the concept and the performance of one amazing actor named Tim Piper. Half way through the production, I was convinced that Tim Piper was John Lennon. Lennon's speech patterns, mannerisms and off-handed approach to entertaining are all there.

Piper/Lennon tells Beatles' inside stories and gives the audience a close up and personal history of his music as it related to his life.

Just Imagine is different due to the fact that the two hour show is basically a musical centered around a superb actor. Piper sings and plays beautifully and after the intermission, literally walks out alone with a guitar and asks the audience for Beatles' songs....any Beatles' songs, which he then performs solo with the entire audience singing along.

Backing Piper is one magnificent band consisting of Musical Director, Greg Piper (Bass), Don Butler (Lead Guitar), Morley Bartnoff (Keyboards) and Don Poncher (Drums).

Artfully directed by Steve Altman, Just Imagine had the audience on it's feet for at least fifteen minutes after closing and that says it all.

Just Imagine is a "must see" in this writer's book. The performance made my day and brought back a time I thought I had forgotten. Not to mention a tear and a giggle.

Showtimes are....October 30th thru November 22nd. Friday and Saturday at 8 PM and Sundays at 3 PM. For information and tickets call 866-811-4111.

Half Dead In Hollywood....Bobby "Boris" Pickett!

This time in 2006 was the last time I saw Bobby Pickett alive.

When he came to the BluePower studio he told us he wasn't well and jokingly said, "We'd better make this a good show as it may be my last."

I don't think it was quite Bobby's last show but very close. On the 25th of April, 2007, the world lost a wonderful human being and a gifted entertainer.

I can't think of a better show for Halloween than this show featuring our dear departed friend....Bobby Pickett.
_____________________________________________

Ever since I've known Bob, I have marveled at his elegance of manner, his ultra-quick wit and his well focused insight to character. We have recorded dozens of commercials and a whole lot of bits together. (He as talent and I as engineer) Through hours of being on the other side of the glass, I gained a great deal of respect for this talented man's work.

Forty-five years ago, a tiny record lable called GARPAX released a single (45 rpm record) to the world. The A side, written by Bob and Lenny Capeci is titled "Monster Mash" and has become synonymous with the holiday, Halloween. There are very few people in the world whom haven't heard, "They did the mash....they did the Monster Mash. It was a graveyard smash!"

And smash it was. This one song has kept Bobby "Boris" Pickett in groceries for forty-five years. and....as Bob mentions, "It's more than paid the rent."

Bob will be appearing at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Secaucus, New Jersey on the 27th, 28th and 29th of October at the 16th Annual Chiller Theatre Expo along with Paul Reubens (Pee-Wee Herman), the enchanting Elvira, plus Adam West and Burt Ward of Batman fame.

His book, Monster Mash, Half Dead In Hollywood is a tremendous read and tells Mr. Pickett's history from the time he was born through today. Bob tells the truth about Hollywood and the denizens that dwell there.

As Mr. Pickett says...."They drag me out for one night a year. It's my time to howl."

It's good to hear you howl again my friend.

Tonight's music is....

1)...."It's Alive"....Bobby "Boris" Pickett
2)...."Dead Man's Party"....Oingo-Boingo
3)...."Monster Mash"....Bobby "Boris" Pickett
4)...."Gallow's Pole"....Jimmy Page and Robert Plant
5)...."Werewolves Of London"....Warren Zevon
6)...."Sinister Stomp"....Bobby "Boris" Pickett
7)...."Got My Mojo Workin' "....Muddy Waters
8)...."Blood Bank Blues"....Bobby "Boris" Pickett

BluePower Presents....Banned In Boston!
Wed, 04 Nov 2009 21:59:18 GMT     Download Audio File 26.92MB     Digg! Bookmark This Page

This is a re-run from February 25th, 2007

During the late 1940s and the 1950s, there were a lot of records made that were a bit past the "blue"side....in fact, these records were downright "gray". So much so, that these records were banned in Boston.

Now banned in Boston is just a term borrowed from the late twenties when there was an organization (which was housed in Boston) that literally banned books from entering public libraries and stopped these books from being sold in America.

In the instance of these recordings however, it was white owned radio during these years which banned what they called "Race" music. Race music in the late forties was merely black music. That title did not change until a young editor from Billboard Magazine came up with a catchy phrase....the rhythm and blues. That man was Jerry Wexler and he would go on to produce some of the greatest rhythm and blues music of all time.

This music spawned some of the greatest labels America has ever known. Atlantic, Atco, Chess, Checker, Argo, King (from which label many of the cuts heard tonight hail), Federal, and on and on. These records needed to be heard. Black radio stepped in to fill the gap and a whole new business was created.

One of the terms of many of these records is "rock and roll" and everyone thinks that Alan Freed coined the phrase. I personally believe that Mr. Freed loved this wild music as much as any of us did at the time and simply borrowed the term. It stuck....and American music would never be the same again.

Tune in as I play many of my favorite "dirty" songs. The songs my step-father did his best to stop me from listening. As you can hear....he failed.

Here's tonight's music:

BluePower Presents....The Blues From Catalonia!

Since we have been involved with BluePower, we have been sent the Blues from some strange places. The country of origin for tonight's music is certainly not a place known for the Blues. Until now, that is. The music and artists for tonight's show come from the relatively little known country of Catalonia. To be quite honest, I have been to Barcelona, Spain before and never knew it was the capitol of Catalonia. I always thought Barcelona was part of Spain. Well....that's a long story and one you should possibly dig into a bit. Catalonia's history is worth studying.

Catalonia is a Mediterranean country located on the northwestern triangle of the Iberian Peninsular. Historically, it's location has turned it into a land of peace, where various peoples and cultures have come together.

The CD we're presenting tonight is titled Blues Cat and features artists who all hail from Catalonia, Spain.

The CD was sent to us from our friend, Vicente Zumel of Barcelona. Vicente has been producing and hosting a Blues radio show in Barcelona for 25 years called La Hora Del Blues. The man has a remarkable set of archives and does a wonderfully impromptu show. Please give a listen when you have time.

BluePower sends it's congratulations to all the talented artists of Catalan and apologizes for the fact that we could not get to all the great players on Blues Cat this time around. We hope you'll forgive us.

Thanks for tuning in.

BluePower CD Review....8 Ball Aitken....Rebel With A Cause!

For months now, we at BluePower have been searching for product we could enthusiastically endorse. Though receiving plenty of product, nothing stood out as being new and exciting; that is until we heard 8 Ball Aitken's CD. After listening to it a dozen or so times, I knew I had found the product for which I had been looking.

I remembered back to when I was a young record promo man in the Deep South, hauling boxes of new product into radio stations hoping to get some airplay. In those days, good songs always received significant airplay. The CD we're playing today is what I would then call my "Ace in the hole" because it is an album of great songs. Nothing intense or heavy, just fine writing of  some good-time, heart-felt music.

Hailing from "way down under", 8 Ball Aitken has copped some of Australia's finest music awards. (Check out his website to see all.)  His playing, though straight-forward, is pure and goes to the heart of the music. 8 Ball has done his homework, the man rocks without going over the top. Something which has not been prevalent on the American music scene for some time.

Congratulations to all those involved with this product. It's a mighty fine piece of work!

Hit Producer, Engineer And Friend, Larry Cox Passes Away!

Pictured from left to right: John Rhys, Suzanne Ellis and Larry Cox

The call came this morning. Larry Cox had finally succumbed to cancer. He fought the disease bravely throughout the last several years. He had mentioned that his wish was to go and that he thought he wasn't going to win the battle. His friend, Marilyn Parker, called with the news.

Larry will be remembered always for his contributions to American popular music. He had several number one records, a feat not easily achieved. He produced and engineered "Precious And Few" for Sonny Geraci and Climax and produced "Miracles" for the Jefferson Starship. Both went to number one in the charts.

Larry was a gentleman and a real human being and is already greatly missed.

Funeral arrangements are being prepared in Littlefield, Texas. Flowers and condolences may be sent to:

Marilyn Parker

BluePower is preparing a show with a number of Larry's great productions. Stay tuned!

Can you believe it? Another year has passed quickly away. Where did the time go? I'll have to check my diary.
I know we lost a lot of good folks somewhere along the way this year and I surely hope they have passed this mortal coil in a positive direction.

Myself....Well I consider it lucky now if I just wake up every day and feel pretty good. I am not unique in that regard.

I did want to put a little something together for Christmas just in case a few folks would like to hear a few tunes which are not ordinarily played off the normal channels.

Please join me on this beautiful California, laid back, Christmas Eve.

Martin Luther King....A Biography!
Tue, 12 Jan 2010 01:42:04 GMT     Digg! Bookmark This Page

Martin Luther King, Jr., (January 15, 1929-April 4, 1968) was born Michael Luther King, Jr., but later had his name changed to Martin. His grandfather began the family's long tenure as pastors of the Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta, serving from 1914 to 1931; his father has served from then until the present, and from 1960 until his death Martin Luther acted as co-pastor. Martin Luther attended segregated public schools in Georgia, graduating from high school at the age of fifteen; he received the B. A. degree in 1948 from Morehouse College, a distinguished Negro institution of Atlanta from which both his father and grandfather had graduated. After three years of theological study at Crozer Theological Seminary in Pennsylvania where he was elected president of a predominantly white senior class, he was awarded the B.D. in 1951. With a fellowship won at Crozer, he enrolled in graduate studies at Boston University, completing his residence for the doctorate in 1953 and receiving the degree in 1955. In Boston he met and married Coretta Scott, a young woman of uncommon intellectual and artistic attainments. Two sons and two daughters were born into the family.

In 1954, Martin Luther King accepted the pastorale of the Dexter Avenue Baptist Church in Montgomery, Alabama. Always a strong worker for civil rights for members of his race, King was, by this time, a member of the executive committee of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, the leading organization of its kind in the nation. He was ready, then, early in December, 1955, to accept the leadership of the first great Negro nonviolent demonstration of contemporary times in the United States, the bus boycott described by Gunnar Jahn in his presentation speech in honor of the laureate. The boycott lasted 382 days. On December 21, 1956, after the Supreme Court of the United States had declared unconstitutional the laws requiring segregation on buses, Negroes and whites rode the buses as equals. During these days of boycott, King was arrested, his home was bombed, he was subjected to personal abuse, but at the same time he emerged as a Negro leader of the first rank.

In 1957 he was elected president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, an organization formed to provide new leadership for the now burgeoning civil rights movement. The ideals for this organization he took from Christianity; its operational techniques from Gandhi. In the eleven-year period between 1957 and 1968, King traveled over six million miles and spoke over twenty-five hundred times, appearing wherever there was injustice, protest, and action; and meanwhile he wrote five books as well as numerous articles. In these years, he led a massive protest in Birmingham, Alabama, that caught the attention of the entire world, providing what he called a coalition of conscience. and inspiring his "Letter from a Birmingham Jail", a manifesto of the Negro revolution; he planned the drives in Alabama for the registration of Negroes as voters; he directed the peaceful march on Washington, D.C., of 250,000 people to whom he delivered his address, "l Have a Dream", he conferred with President John F. Kennedy and campaigned for President Lyndon B. Johnson; he was arrested upwards of twenty times and assaulted at least four times; he was awarded five honorary degrees; was named Man of the Year by Time magazine in 1963; and became not only the symbolic leader of American blacks but also a world figure.

At the age of thirty-five, Martin Luther King, Jr., was the youngest man to have received the Nobel Peace Prize. When notified of his selection, he announced that he would turn over the prize money of $54,123 to the furtherance of the civil rights movement.

On the evening of April 4, 1968, while standing on the balcony of his motel room in Memphis, Tennessee, where he was to lead a protest march in sympathy with striking garbage workers of that city, he was assassinated.

In The Beginning....The Vaudeville Years!
Wed, 20 Jan 2010 20:19:59 GMT     Download Audio File 0.00MB     Digg! Bookmark This Page

Vaudeville entertainment for black audiences began in 1909 with an organization called TOBA. Those four letters stood for Theater Owners Bookers Association. Often called by the black entertainers who worked the TOBA circuit: Tough On Black Artists. For many of the artists, trying times to be sure. However, it was an important cog in the machine which brought black entertainment to the rural areas and large cities in the early part of the century. TOBA had more than 100 theaters operating by the end of the 1920s.

Blues and Jazz were an important part of black entertainment in those early years and surely both idioms grew because of the fine caliber of the performers of that era and their ability to reach large audiences throughout most of the country.

Actual recordings started being made in 1914 by Victor, Columbia and Edison though the Edison company finally bowed out of the business. In 1918, the Paramount Record Company (a subsidiary of the Wisconsin Chair Company of Port Washington) came into being primarily to make recordings for folks to play on their newly purchased record players which were made by the Chair Company. Paramount is famous today for two things....they were first to record Blind Lemon Jefferson and Ma Rainey and....they made terrible quality pressings of cheap shellac. Were it not for Paramount however, many great artists would never have been heard. Business is business.

The Vaudeville Years highlights some of the dynamic female vocalists of that time, women who set the mark for all other female blues shouters to follow.

The strength of the Blues can be determined by the sheer amount of ground the music has covered in the last 80 years. In that time, this purely American art-form has managed to blossom in nearly every country in the world. The Blues has been transformed into nearly every language and is understood by every man and woman ever born. No one can honestly say they "have not" had the Blues at one time or another.

In this presentation, BluePower honors a man for his contributions to the Blues and Rock from the beautiful country of Ireland. Barry McCabe was born in Virginia, Co. Cavan, Ireland and has managed to travel the world bringing his music to hundreds of thousands of people. Barry's music can best be described as Rock and Blues with a Celtic twist.

This show features music from many of Barry's CDs but primarily from his new release, Beyond The Tears.

Tune in to this masterful player, writer and performer as he guides us through many stories of life and the pursuit of happiness. A true storyteller in every sense of the word, Barry McCabe gives his all to his art; to our benefit.
