| Bach, Toccata and Fugue in D minor, organ |
Bach's most famous organ piece, with a bar-graph score. FAQ Q: Can I download a version to play on my computer/iPod/iPad/iPhone/etc.? A: Yes, you can get that here: musanim.cerizmo.com Q: Where can I get free sheet music for this piece? A: Sheet music for this can be found here: tinyurl.com Q: Who wrote Bach's Toccata and Fugue in D Minor? Q: Isn't that like asking who's buried in Grant's Tomb? A: Heh-heh. A theory has recently (1981) been put forth that JS Bach did not write this piece. A brief summary of the supporting evidence for this theory can be read here: en.wikipedia.org Q: What's wrong with synchronization? A: I don't know, but it appears that if you use this URL, it works better: www.youtube.com Q: Where can I get the mp3 of this? A: You can download it here: www.musanim.com Q: What does the piece look like as a whole? A: There are versions you can print out here www.musanim.com The 'scroll' version is for cutting out and taping together to form a long strip. Q: Where can I get the MIDI file that this was made from? A: I'm not sure it's exactly the same, but the closest I could find was this: www.musanim.com Q: Hey, what happened to my question/comment? A: Questions answered in the FAQ, and comments with nothing to do with the video ("spam"), are removed. If you posted a comment and don't know why it's gone, email me (stephen at musanim dot com) with "YouTube comment" in the subject line. Q: How did you make this video? | Donna Summer - MacArthur Park Suite (Extended Version) 1977 |
"MacArthur Park" is a song by Jimmy Webb, originally composed as part of an intended cantata. The song was initially rejected by The Association. Richard Harris was the first to record it, in 1968; the song was subsequently covered by numerous artists. Among the best-known covers are Donna Summer's disco arrangement from 1978 and Waylon Jennings's version recorded in 1969. Maynard Ferguson, Stan Kenton, and Woody Herman all performed big-band jazz arrangements, and "Weird Al" Yankovic parodied it in his 1993 "Jurassic Park." While a commercially successful song multiple times it was released, "MacArthur Park" utilized flowery lyrics and metaphors (most famously, love being likened to a cake left out in the rain) that were considered by media such as the Los Angeles Times to be "polarizing" and "loopy." The inspiration for "MacArthur Park" was the relationship and breakup between Webb and Susan Ronstadt, a cousin of singer Linda Ronstadt. MacArthur Park was where the two occasionally met for lunch and spent their most enjoyable times together. At that time (mid-1965), Ronstadt worked for a life insurance company whose offices were located just across the street from the park. Webb and Ronstadt remained friends, even after her marriage to another man. The breakup was also the primary influence for "By the Time I Get to Phoenix," another Webb composition. A multi-million selling vinyl single disco version of "MacArthur Park" by Donna Summer was number one on the American pop <b>...</b> |

| Arturo Sandoval - Dear Diz (Every Day I Think Of You) |
Preview the album on Amazon: bzz.is Arturo Sandoval releases his second album on Concord Jazz, Dear Diz (Every Day I Think of You). The album is Sandoval's tribute to Dizzy Gillespie, the mentor and friend who literally rescued him and his family from an oppressive existence and gave them a chance at an entirely new and better life. The album is a collection of classics from Gillespie's massive body of work, each framed in big-band arrangements that throw the spotlight squarely on the elements of bebop that underscore so much of the iconic trumpeter's work and set the tone for the music of his era. Backing Sandoval on the project is a crew of top-shelf jazz artists: vibraphonist Gary Burton, Yellowjacket's leader saxophonist Bob Mintzer, organist Joey DeFrancesco, clarinetist Eddie Daniels, saxophonist Ed Calle, drummer/producer Gregg Field and several others. Also along for the ride are a couple of unlikely but well-placed surprises - actors Andy Garcia on percussion and vocalist Manolo Gimenez. The resulting set is, as Field puts it, is Sandoval's "love letter to an old friend." |

| Clare Fischer & Cal Tjader - The Man That Got Away (4 Judy Garland, James Mason & Clare) |
Just as I was posting this video on Facebook a week or so after having unveiled it on Youtube, Clare himself, in one of life's crueler bits of irony, 'got away.' This is a hurt that won't soon heal. But at least - & at last - Clare is freed from the ever-mounting ailments of the past decade. Moreover, moving forward, massive amounts of previously unrecorded, as well as some never B4 digitally realized, Clare Fischer compositions & arrangements have recently been, & r continuing 2B, recorded under the baton of composer/arranger Brent Fischer, Clare's son, assistant & collaborator for more than 30 years. The recent releases, "Continuum" & "And Sometimes Instruments," r merely the opening volley in what promises 2B an impressive & mouth-watering barrage of Fischerian riches rained down upon us over the upcoming decade. 2 receive updates on these developments, & 2 purchase existing recordings (including this Clare/Cal collaboration), not 2 mention sheet music, or simply 2 obtain miscellaneous Clare-ification, visit www.clarefischer.com. From the 1960 LP, "Cal Tjader Plays Harold Arlen" (& the 2002 CD, "Cal Tjader Plays Harold Arlen & West Side Story"), Fischer's unusually percussive arrangement features nearly three solid minutes of pizzicato strings & occasion harp interjections, w the melody carried by Tjader on vibes &, on piano, NOT Fischer (notwithstanding my use of a couple of his pics near the beginning), but rather Buddy Motsinger. |

| Tom Harrell performs "Beau Soir" for Quick Hits |
Filmed for the Sound Tracks: Quick Hits series by the Talbot Players in association with PBS Arts (www.facebook.com It might seem strange that a composer as original as Tom Harrell would throw himself into the melodies of dead French impressionists, but he's done far more than write "jazz" arrangements of Claude Debussy and Maurice Ravel. While staying true to the melodic roots of the music, he's effectively re-composed these pieces. All of the musicians in Tom's Chamber Ensemble—not just his core working group, but the 'hired guns' brought in for these arrangements— clearly revere Tom. They love playing this music, even though—well, probably because—the jazz/classical fusion requires outsize talent and technical skill. We noticed that many of the performers set down their own personal digital recorders on their stands or at their feet to keep their own record of that night's gig. |

| Lady in Satin Billie Holiday & Ray Ellis - I'm A Fool To Want You (1958) |
Lady in Satin is an album by jazz singer Billie Holiday released in 1958 on Columbia Records, catalogue CL 1157 in mono and CS 8048 in stereo. It is the next to final album completed by the singer and released in her lifetime (her final album, Billie Holiday, being recorded in March 1959 and released just after her death). The original album was produced by Irving Townsend, and engineered by Fred Plaut. Unlike the bulk of Holiday's recordings, rather than in the setting of a jazz combo Holiday returns to the backdrop of full orchestral arrangements as done during her Decca years. The album consists of songs Holiday had never recorded before. The arrangements were by bandleader Ray Ellis. Soloists on the album included Mel Davis, Urbie Green, and bebop trombone pioneer JJ Johnson. Ray Ellis said of the album in 1997: "I would say that the most emotional moment was her listening to the playback of "I'm a Fool to Want You". There were tears in her eyes...After we finished the album I went into the control room and listened to all the takes. I must admit I was unhappy with her performance, but I was just listening musically instead of emotionally. It wasn't until I heard the final mix a few weeks later that I realized how great her performance really was." |

| The Art of Jazz Arranging - Richard DeRosa - University of North Texas |
Richard DeRosa, who teaches jazz composition and arranging at the University of North Texas, has arranged and conducted music for Wynton Marsalis and the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra. Other arrangements have been recorded by the Mel Lewis, Gerry Mulligan, and Glenn Miller big bands, vocalist Susannah McCorkle, Arranging is where a musician prepares and adapts an already written composition for presentation in other than its original form. An arrangement may include reharmonization, paraphrasing, and/or development of a composition, so that it fully represents the melodic, harmonic, and rhythmic structure. Arranging is the art of giving an existing melody musical variety. Arrangements for small jazz combos are usually informal, minimal, and uncredited. This was particularly so for combos in the bebop era. In general, the larger the ensemble, the greater the need for a formal arrangement, although the early Count Basie big band was famous for its head arrangements, so called because they were worked out by the players themselves, memorized immediately and never written down. Most arrangements for large ensembles, big bands, in the swing era, were written down, however, and credited to a specific arranger, as were later arrangements for the Count Basie big band by Sammy Nestico and Neal Hefti. Don Redman made significant innovations in the pattern of arrangement in Fletcher Henderson's orchestra in the 1920s. He introduced the pattern of arranging melodies in the body of <b>...</b> |
